I went to my cousin's house this weekend for his 10th birthday party. His backyard is gigantic and the woods are right out there. We decided to play hide and seek outside because there are some really good hiding spots. We played so many rounds of hide and seek and it was so fun. Then we had sword fights with sticks which probably wasn't the safest idea but no one got hurt. We went inside and had cake and ice cream. My cousin opened his presents. After that, we went back outside and had a Nerf war. It was starting to get dark so we had to come inside. We had to go after that. My weekend was so much fun.
This is my persuasive writing to convince people that zoos are a good thing. Alexis Holman
December, 17 2014 Zoos Are zoos a good thing? Yes, I think zoos are important and that they are good. One reason is that they help animals that are sick or injured. Another reason is that people can learn about animals. Finally, they help endangered animals from going extinct. I think one benefit of having zoos is that they can get health care if they are sick or injured. Animals might not be able to take care of their young if they are sick or injured. Research from Britannica shows that the animals get day-to-day care. They also feed them enough everyday to keep them healthy. That is something important that zoos do to help. Another thing about zoos is that they can teach people about animals and protecting them. They can learn about their habitats and how to protect them. Research from Britannica shows that the main reason for zoos is for people to learn. People can also learn about how to keep animals safe. I think learning about how to protect animals and their habitats is important. Finally, zoos keep endangered animals safe. Endangered animals will be at less risk of becoming extinct. Also, they will be protected from poachers. Britannica says that they get the correct health care and a nice environment and food so they feel like they are in the wild. I think that protecting endangered animals is important. I think having zoos are important and that they are a good thing. They help animals that are hurt or injured, teach people about animals and their habitats, and help endangered animals from going extinct. So zoom on over to zoos and learn about animals and protecting them! Sources
We did an inquiry project for a historical event that has different perspectives. I did the Salem witch trials, where they accused people of witchcraft in 1692. The two sides are Samuel Parris and Tituba. Here is my PowToon about the two sides. We did a Borax crystal experiment for science so we could identify the different properties of minerals. I was really surprised at how they turned out. I never thought that mixing water and borax would cause the crystals to grow on the pipe cleaners. Here is what my crystal look like. We did shrinky-dinks which are things that you make out of plastic. You cut the plastic, draw on it with a permanent marker and heat it up so it will shrink. At first, I saw them curling in the oven, and I thought they were ruined! But, then they flattened down and they came out and looked really cool. I am so glad that Dr. Adams got to come and do them with us! Here is what mine looks like. A book that inspired me is The Giver by Lois Lowry. The reason I chose The Giver is because it showed me how important it is to keep memories and pass them down from person to person, otherwise it will feel like the past didn't even exist. It also taught me how there are wonderful memories that will make everyone joyful and happy, but there are also horrible memories that hurt your heart or make you sad or angry. All the memories are important though because the bad ones, like war, can teach you not to do something that happened in the past. What really surprised me was that they didn't know what color was or love and I just could't imagine living like that, where everyone and everything was the same. I think everyone should read The Giver to learn how important memories from the past are and how everything doesn't need to be perfect. #BookItForward
These are journal entries from Virginia Dare, that I wrote of how I think she felt and what happened.
June 14, 1587 I just arrived to to the new colony, Roanoke. I am both excited, for being in a new colony and scared, because I have no idea of the trouble that might be out there. I traveled with my brother and my father. My mother had to stay back home to take care of my sister. Before I left, she gave me this journal so I could write down everything I did and saw. I hope I can see my dear mother again. June 15, 1587 My brother, Billy and I went into the woods yesterday. We saw strange people with dark skin staring at us while we were climbing trees. Once I saw them, I was terrified. I grabbed Billy’s arm and pulled him back to camp. I told father about what we saw and he insisted that we go back and talk to them about the land and animals but I was too scared to go any where near the creatures. I have bad feelings about those creatures. December 30, 1588 This will be the last time I write for a while. The creatures have been coming in our settlement with weapons while screaming an unknown language. Father usually has to chase them away. I know they are not happy with us but I do not know why. I hope nothing happens to our settlement because I want to see it grow and I want mother to come and see how well we are. Father said we need to blow out all the candles. This is goodbye for n My Thanksgiving break was full of fun of fun things to do with my family. We had our Thanksgiving dinner with my mom and my grandparents. We had pretty much everything, but my favorite thing was the stuffing and I don't think anything else could top that. After we stuffed ourselves with food, we went outside to play in the snow. The next day we went to my other grandma's house to have breakfast and play with my cousins. When we got back, we went to play in the snow again and sled. When we came in we watched movies and drank hot chocolate. Saturday, we played outside almost all day. When we came in we were tired, so we watched TV and stayed inside the rest of the night. On Sunday, we stayed inside and watched movies and played inside. My Thanksgiving break was so much fun. I am happy I got to spend it with my family.
This was our first time using PowToon to make a video for European colonization. You can watch the video about three settlements, Roanoke, Jamestown, and Plymouth. Cystic fibrosis is a disease that makes it hard to digest and slowly shuts down the lungs. The expected life for someone with cystic fibrosis is only 35 and it is inherited by parents. Today Mr. Glade said, "Research cystic fibrosis and see what comes up." We all researched cystic fibrosis and immediately I thought it was a disease. It causes the mucus in your lungs to be thick and makes it hard to breathe and do activities. We watched the music video for the song "I Lived" by One Republic, and it was about a boy who had cystic fibrosis, but didn't let that stop him from enjoying his life. Watching the video and seeing the lyrics reminded me that, live your life while you still have. I also am so happy that I'm and lucky enough that my parents don't have cystic fibrosis so my brother, my sister and I didn't get it. When I watched what the boy, Bryan, put a vibrating vest on to loosen up his mucus in his lungs and have the mask over his mouth and nose, I felt horrible that he had to do that once or twice every day. I am happy Mr. Glade showed us this video and we got to research it. I hope that someday doctors will find a cure for this horrible disease. Watch the video below. For social studies we did a research project on a certain explorer. I chose Juan Ponce de Leon. This is a Haiku Deck I made to record my information.
